Re: Cookery book bargain
It's her Book of Middle Eastern Food I'm after for my 1970s cookbook collection...
Re: Cookery book bargain
I found this CR book on Wordery at £17.49 published in 1986. Might you find a cheaper one of this somewhere if you can't find the original?

Re: Cookery book bargain
Thanks for tracking those down. I'm going to resist for now as I really need to try and ltrim my cookery collection rather than grow it!
I've looked back at the piccy in the 1984 "Foodie's Handbook" which prompted me to consider getting that book, which was a snapshot of the foodie favourites back then. Looking at it now, there's too many I haven't got to consider trying to complete the set, and many are probably outdated. Certainly the Jennifer Brennan Thai book is complete rubbish.
How many of these books have you got? I've got 8, and books by seven of the other authors. No Escoffier or Marcella Hazan.

Re: Cookery book bargain
i have three;
the first elizabeth david on that shelf (surprised a couple of others, which i have, weren't there),
the roger philips mushroom book
- and the madhur jaffrey (along with a couple of others of hers).
it seems a bit 'french' (and chinese) heavy for nowadays, doesn't it‽‽

Re: Cookery book bargain
Maybe because as you said, it's a bit of a French heavy list!
These are the ones I have:
Elizabeth David Mediterranean Food
Elizabeth David An Omelette and a Glass of Wine
Julia Child Mastering the Art of French Cookery
Quentin Crewe Great Chefs of France (in Heston B's top 10)
Madhur Jaffrey Indian Cookery
Jennifer Brennan Thai Cooking
Phia Sing Traditional Recipes of Laos
Pei Mei Book One
I've got seven of these, although the Oliver Sachs one is hardly a cookbook...

Can't find the Heston B Top 10 that prompted me to get the Quentin Crewe book.

Re: Cookery book bargain
Does anyone remember the Hamlyn All-Colour Book of Cookery, a 1970s staple for anyone setting-up home?
There was also the stalwart Marguerite Patten but she was a relic of the war years, so old-fashioned by the '70s.
Cookery took off for me with Delia Smith. I still use her books for basic dishes.

I've mentioned before that I worked at the Paul Hamlyn studio for a couple of weeks in 1972 as a college "internship" when they were producing the Dairy Book of Home Cookery, that book being my other "go to" book alongside my Marguerite Patten one. I'm pretty certain they were working on an update to the All-Colour book too in the studio at that time. The highlight was watching Tony Streek drawing the line illustrations for the Dairy book.

The dairy book remains excellent I think. I have been through several copies, and given some away, it shows up quite often in charity shops luckily.
And you were there, wow.

I had copies of a few of the dairy books - they were published every year for a while. I thought they were very good - my favourite lasagne recipe is from one of them.

Re: Cookery book bargain
Several? I only have two, what have I missed?
Re: Cookery book bargain
They were published annually for at least 3 or 4 years, I'm sure, although the last one that I bought had a number of recipes from previous versions so I decided to stop buying them. I used to get them from the milkman.
Re: Cookery book bargain
Mine came from the milkman! II still use it regularly but it's hard work because it's all in ounces.
