Naughtiest Desserts

Postby Sakkarin » Sat Nov 09, 2019 2:44 pm

Treacle Tart has been on my "to do" list for a while, but I keep thinking of the amount of sugar and butter and cream in it, and putting it off.

I used up the last of my golden syrup yesterday in my porridge oats, so I need to get some more, and I'm still toying with making some treacle tart.

Here's the reason for this thread - after watching Nadia Sawalha making a Tiramisu full of cream and chocolate and full fat mascarpone: I wondered which were the naughtiest puddings, and maybe there's a way of ordering them, based on (say) sugar having a naughtiness of 10, butter of 8 and cream 7 (or whatever we agree).

I've not really thought this through, just throwing it out there, with a view to ending up with a top 10 naughtiest and a top 10 least naughty, but still nice.

P.S. It's over 20 years since Nadia was in Eastenders!

Delia's chocolate truffle torte would be right up there. Say 8?

I can think of a couple. Banoffi pie. Sticky toffee pudding. Deep south bread pudding with bourbon sauce and Mississpi Mud Pie.

Pavlova, although the added fruit does make it super healthy of course :)

Banoffi Pie has fruit, so it's off the hook too.

And there's eggs (and of course AIR!!!) in the pavlova...

Still not got my head around this yet.

I would have gone with mud pie had it not already been said. It sets a high bar though.

How about (proper) rum-soaked baba with thick cream. Or that Greek/Turkish shredded wheat and syrup tray bake?

Oh dear, reminds me of the time I made homemade baklava (I seem to remember it being time consuming and expensive)...

Gave half of it to neighbours, but they gave it back, said it was far too sweet for them :-(

And another neighbour, went round with a huge plate of homemade Danish pastries when I was practising for college, and the neighbour said "we don't eat sugary things coz my husband's got diabetes..."

A favourite years ago was a tartlet from a local baker which was a sweet shortcrust base, layer of sweet lemon curd, layer of light sweet soft gooey meringue, topped with a thick layer of fondant icing. (They probably thought a glacé cherry on top would make it too sweet.) Luckily free dentistry existed in those days.

my top ten would most likely include
chocolate pots (joanne harris's cook book) - half and half plain chocolate and double cream melted together.
syllabub.
treacle tart.
bakewell tart.
syrup pudding.
baklava.
sticky toffee pudding with a thick caramel sauce.
christmas pudding.
hot chocolate brownie with clotted cream.
well, anything with a big dollop of clotted cream.

Halva can be sweet enough to rot your teeth as well as being riddled with calories.
Delicious though.

Both Christmas pud and STP are full of fruit, contribute to your five a day and are therefore virtually health foods. :D

Treacle tart and syrup pud have got no such claims. Neither had that red velvet cake that Mrs B made a while back, about 1000 calories per slice. :o

Naughty desserts are a subject of keen interest to me :klingonbanana .

I'd say one of the traditional English puds like syrup sponge or jam roll poly is probably up there. Profiteroles are very naughty too, particularly with a hot chocolate sauce .

When I'm in the mood for chocolate, I love chocolate fudge cake with a big dollop of cream on the side . No nutritional value at all , but great for the mental health rather than the physical :yum

As I am now diabetic, everything apart from sugar free jellies, fruit compote sweetened with sweetener and crackers and cheese are off limits for me. The only 'proper' pudding I have made was a makeover apple and blackberry crumble for the night before a sponsored walk that I did for charity last month. Boy did I enjoy it - both the crumble and the walk  !

Oh dear, what a pain! Part of why I'm being more critical of what I eat is that I have some of the precursors to diabetes (I think). But I find it extremely difficult not to binge on sweet stuff.

Pepper

Agreed on saint Delia. I made it several times. Always turned out great.

There is the Willie Harcourt close version of that, rates high in my book.

Do you know what? I don't particularly go for chocolate dessers and I won't go out of my way to order one in a restaurant. We have an absolutely top-class patisserie in town. There are a couple of their specialities I could cherefully commit murder for but neither is massively sweet. It is just that they are perfectly made and every single texture and flavour just works.

I’m reminded that my sister always makes this at Christmas.

That looks wicked, but what are "peanut butter morsels"? Is it unbranded mini Reeses chocolate cups?
