Masa harina in the UK

Postby Binky » Sat Sep 21, 2019 6:16 pm

I want to make my own corn tortillas - the shop bought ones contain palm oil, which I am boycotting.

Trying to locate masa harina is almost impossible. Staff show me to white maize meal, or pre-cooked maize meal, or just corn flour. I don't think any of these would make a proper tortilla.

If anyone makes their own tortillas, what sort of flour do you use as a substitute?

Thanks amy, but it's unavailable and it's not known when next on sale.

Funnily enough I noticed it in a local whole foods store yesterday, which suggests it’s worth checking in any similar stores you come across, and check the gluten free section as well as the mainstream baking section (eta although Whole Foods Market do sell it, I think I saw it in the Asian/Caribbean shop yesterday)

Google says Tesco stock it, but probably not in all branches

And Mexgrocer sell it mail order of course, though could work out expensive on postage.

Do you have a tortilla press? I think Mexgrocer sell them too

Sous Chef also sell it online along with loads of other interesting ingredients.

Randomly, there is a Mexican owned burrito place in Manchester who also sell various sauces, dried chillis etc and they often have it in stock. Might be worth seeing if there is anywhere similar near you.

You can have mine, I am afraid I've failed miserably at (masa) tortilla making, and the tortilla press is just an ornament now.

Last time I bought masa it came from Sainsburys. Is that another exotic ingredient that's disappeared off the shelves?

I love flour tortillas anyway, so that's my substitute!

Yes, when I made some a few years ago, I got my masa harina from Sainsbury.

I have zero recollection of doing it, but I think Clive told me you have to use hot water with this flour?
