British mincemeat usually a Christmas ‘preserve’ . It has nothing at all to do with minced meat (usually called mince over here) . I haven’t got time at the moment to explain, but if you Google mincemeat (one word) you’ll get the idea.
Then of course, we’ll get loads of replies on here , everyone giving their special recipes and probably a good explanation of it’s history which is always good fun.

It's the 23rd today, so fingers crossed for you wargarden :crossed Let us know.

Well done on your tomato sauce first place. Do you put it down to the type of tomatoes you can get or to the inclusion of other ingredients?

jeral winning that year i put down to three factors, tomato variety, the other ingredients and the unconventional cooking method used to prepare the sauce. I used the bake method for making sauce not simmer down method.
note the sauce category is meat free so that makes tougher to make good sauce.

The bake method is one the great cookery writer Elizabeth David recommended, I used to do it in the days when I could buy large amounts of tasty, ugly, Moroccan tomatoes cheap in the market

Had almost forgotten it

Can I boast about my gold medal at the International N Marmalde competition in Penrith Cumbria ? However those who need or want to know, Know. But good luck WG. It's lovely to enter anything at a local show. I beat my grandmother into second place at the Gosforth flower and produce show (NE England in 1955) in the best apple tart competition. I still have the certificate. As far as I remember there were 20+ competitors, mostly my family and the WI (Women's Institute )

Very well done Joan, but with your background, it doesn't surprise me!

I will certainly be bragging next month about the 20th anniversary of my double distinction in my C&G cookery course!

Mind you, that took me three years...

OK i know it was naughty and any award for anything is a matter of great sense of achievement. As Renee says I was really encouraged to be competitive in my cooking from a very young age - so I blame the family :thumbsup

And yes, I do hope WG is rewarded for his efforts,

Over here, in Oz, the 'British mincemeat' is often called 'fruit mince' which makes more sense to me!!
But originally, mincemeat (fruity type) apparently did always contain some meat and many modern recipes contain beef suet!

next week two more baking contests i may enter at fair. popovers and the other decorated cake contest.
the popovers i mastered last year.
the decorated cake i may on not enter; it all depends on homemade sugar molds working correctly.

Congratulations Wargarden. :clap :wino

It’s many years since I entered local village show cooking competitions ... sometimes I did well, often I was an also ran ... bug I was a very inexperienced cook back then. I like to think I learned a lot from entering and seeing the results and asking advice from the winners about how I could improve ... without exception everyone was very happy to help me improve :thumbsup
