Oat Noggins
Has anyone got or knows where to find "Ian in France" recipe for Oat Noggins Please.
Re: Oat Noggins
It is on Wildfood here: http://www.wildfood.info/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=7616&p=337056&hilit=Noggins#p337056
Re: Oat Noggins
a quick look at the recipe, and they resemble flapjacks to me.
I wonder if 'flapjack' is an Americanism, and we were all baking noggins back in the day....

Re: Oat Noggins
Isn’t a flapjack a traybake? These are biscuits, more like Anzacs
In fact, spot the difference eta it’s obviously the coconut!)

Re: Oat Noggins
I also didn’t think ‘flapjacks’ are a thing in the US. Ian explained in one of his posts that the original name in the recipe book is considered racially offensive, so he changed it to ‘noggins’

Re: Oat Noggins
I think there are quite a lot of these oat based biscuits
But I had a thought and Googled - in the US a flapjack is in fact a pancake, I thought I’d heard that

Re: Oat Noggins
I've done you a Noggin versus Flapjack chart.
Maybe it is mainly for convenience,
the noggin has equal main ingredients.
Mostly.

Re: Oat Noggins
Interesting. Is it the brown sugar that makes them crunchy?
Any chance you could add Stokey Sue's Anzac biccie recipe to your graph pretty please?

Re: Oat Noggins
I like flapjacks that are slightly sticky and think that the Noggin with the higher oat content would be more dry.
Re: Oat Noggins
I like my flapjacks sticky too , though they’re not one of my favourite baked treats . I got confused when I went to America and saw flapjacks described on a menu which were actually pancakes
Re: Oat Noggins
I made a batch of the noggins, and they were OK, but still by far my favourite oat recipes are both Hummingbird Bakery ones, their Oat & Raisin cookies and their Muesli bars. I'll redo the chart above and add in Hummingbird cookies and Stokey's recipe, even though Joan will hate it because it's got coconut in it...
EDIT: Oooer, that's a bit too complicated...

Re: Oat Noggins
I'm very impressed with that chart Sakkarin! A bit early in the morning to get my head around it, but the Hummingbird biscuits contain quite a lot of flour and the flapjacks don't contain any. The Hummingbird recipe doesn't contain any syrup, which, I think, gives the flapjacks their stickiness, also flavour.
Re: Oat Noggins
I think I'll forgo all of them in favour of that bread pudding I made the other day, I ended up with quite a fondness for it!
The Hummingbird oaties were a favourite, but in hindsight they are a bit too sweet - and those noggins were even sweeter!
Hummingbird muesli bars are probably top of the bill, but have too many ingredients in them and need too much forward planning, whereas all the others are storecupboard standbys.
