Comfort food

Postby Amyw » Fri Jul 19, 2019 7:26 pm

I had a really nasty dentist visit yesterday , so very sore and swollen jaw today . Feeling decidedly sorry for myself so have cooked a comfort food dinner . Poached a chicken breast which I shredded and mixed in with some creamed cabbage id made and some lardons . Added lots of seasoning to it and am eyeing up a tin of rice pudding for later , Ambrosia of course .

What other kind of food do people like if they’re feeling a bit grotty or down for whatever reason . Other comfort food so like are a jacket potato with a lovely crispy skin and loads of grated cheese on top , bowl of soup with crusty bread or a traditional British pud, such as bread and butter pudding , as discussed earlier . I think anything eaten with a spoon is comforting in itself

Toast and Marmite, rice pudding and on the road to recover, a lovely roast chicken.

It could be a chilli con carne, a pasta with peanut sauce or Heart Attack Potatoes.

Sorry I know this is an old one but good chicken noodle soup, usually turns things around esp if it is a nasty cold/flu like thing that has got you.

Another couple of soups that hit the spot
real onion soup, the kind where the onions are cooked down for 45 mins or so before adding liquid
or
Potage bonne femme

potatoes do it for me - mashed with gravy, roasties, jacket spuds with sour cream or salted butter, and proper chips.

Massively craving soup now. I might well make some tomorrow. Roast potatoes are one of my favourite ever foods . Could quite happily eat them on their own with a sprinkling of salt .

I love the egg custard and apple idea . Love cooked apple and anything custardy is a winner

Roast potatoes with good gravy are my downfall. I always make extra on the rare occasion that I make a roast and end up eating the lot, because living on my own, there's no competition to eat them. It's just the occasional treat and then I regret it!

Thank you both :newhuggy , feeling a bit better today, thank you .

I know what you mean about roast potatoes Renee. Potatoes generally I’m not overfussed with , but if I could eat one type of potato for the rest of my life it would be roasties

Comfort Foods:

1) I would have to say, tapas of course, and my favorite are calamari or seppia and fried crisp "boquerones" with a drizzle of lemon and occasionally patatas bravas with a piquant smoked Spanish Paprika salsa .. Also great bread, crackers, and assorted cheeses of choice .. an oak aged red wine or having an Albariño with octopus a feira .. Risotto with Boletus or Gamberi, Paella or fresh pasta .. Agnoletti or Ravioli or Tortellini or Tortello.

2)
If I had a flu or bad cold, I always opt for a hot consomée or broth prepared from fresh home made vegetable stock ..

When not up to par, appetite and olfactory are off and hot broths

always give one a sense of warmth and comfort .. " A mother´s penicillin, home made chicken soup " always, Works Wonders worldwide !

Easy.
It's eggs. Runny poached, or 2 x fried eggs.
I can eat them on their own, or with a cooked tomato. Omelettes I adore too.

If I've got a loss of appetite, and have to eat.
Dried biscuits, which I never touch normally. Belvitas are great.

I recently had graham crackers, which I have to say I found wonderful. Never tried them before.

Anyone know where to buy them over here?
Otherwise, I thought I'd try to make them sometime.

It's many years since I'd heard about Graham crackers and found some interesting information about them:

Living as far from London as we do, it may sound odd but I think Selfridges stock them.
