The best microwaved smell from our communal studio kitchen is baked beans.

I cannot think of a single way to knock them.
They smell as good as cooking bacon.
Taste fantastic on toast (butter is a must).
And make an excellent side dish to accompany eggs, sausages, fish fingers etc etc.


And they are vegan!

I'm always a bit ambivalent towards baked beans. I don't mind a small amount on a cooked breakfast, but much prefer properly cooked fresh tomatoes. Tinned tomatoes I find too mushy and spread all over the plate . I've got to say I quite like hash browns although prefer fried potatoes . It's either potatoes in some form or toast though, can't do both

I hate baked beans on toast, soggy toast :twisted: . Occasionally if I have a beige meal , such as sausages and homemade wedges , I might have baked beans with that, but usually tart them up a bit with some chilli flakes or curry powder

I have been known to add a few bits and bobs to make baked beans more interesting as well. Although i will eat the low salt and sugar ones as they are. I do like them as part of a cooked breakfast too, not that I have one very often.

I really hate baked beans. Am not a massive fan of pulses really, although I can manage some.

For me, the worst thing is if I specify no beans on my breakfast, it arrives with them on the plate and I send it back. It returns to the table with the other items still contaminated with bean juice :vomit

Well, what we in the UK regard as ordinary or everyday baked beans are those made by HJ Heinz - so not pinched from the US but sold to us at a profit! First sold by Fortnum and Mason in 1901. Apparently originally they were more like Boston beans, but the pork was taken out during WW2

As I said, colleagues who lived and worked in both our US and UK offices told me that Heinz beans are very different in the two countries.

We do have traditional bean dishes though we use more lentils and peas as dried winter staples, but they aren’t baked beans As such.

I think many the mother of a fussy adolescent is very pleased they remained vegan! And of course many vegetarian adults

We can get beans with sausages, or smoked bacon, or chorizo so the meat seems to be creeping back

Wargarden, rationing in Britain did not finish until 1954. By then the habit of eating baked beans without meat would have become ingrained and so it is today.

A typical Monday meal for us is anything left over from the weekend, frittata, quiche, tomorrow will be ham. Plus jacket potato, mostly baked in oven of course, plus Heinz baked beans. Now we buy their little pots - one minute in micro wave.

I have made my own 'home baked beans' for a very long time now, mainly because I found the size of the Heinz tins very inconvenient! I don't know if my recipe was originally meant for 'Boston beans', but I have tweaked it so much, it now bears little resemblance to the one I first found, but is perfect for us. The other advantage is that I use 500gms. of dried lingot (white haricot) beans, & then freeze in serving size portions.

cherrytree i know rationing in uk lasted that long.
since have quite a few Ministry of Food ration recipes pamphlets from during the war and after.
also I copies of almost all 521 food facts advertisement which contain ration recipes.

Wargarden I lived through a fair bit of the war and spent most of my childhood experiencing rationing. That's one of the reasons I learned to cook - sheer necessity! I stll don't like tinned beans, especially curried one with sultanas!

Growing up mum made what she revered to as soupy beans. Made with either navy or pea beans. She would soak them on a Friday night and rinse them off Saturday morning. Look for small stones too. As I recall, she flavoured it with either diced ham or ham hock, which back in the late 60s/early 70s were as cheap as chips. I was never a big fan but dad enjoyed them. Infact, he would take a bean sammich with him to work on Monday, maybe Tuesday too.

The closest over here might be grandma browns baked beans in a tin. My fav was b and m baked beans in the glass jar. There was brown sugar, maybe molasses and pork of some kind. Great on a picnic. Hot or cold.

Funnily enough I was reading through a book entitled 'Heritage American Cooking' with all sorts of recipes going back to pioneer days, and migrations from German, Italian, Irish people etc.
Boston Baked Beans was in there, but it looked a right faff to me. :D

I can remember making the Boston Baked Beans recipe many years ago, but I used dark brown sugar I seem to remember.

Yes I used brown sugar too. I made mine from the original ‘Paupers Cookbook’ by Joccasta Innes. The family always loved it, but I gave it a miss as I detest beans.
