My beloved uncle was a peripatetic woodwork teacher in the Dales. One of the schools he visited was in Hawes - this was just after the war. He always came home with a piece of fruit cake or apple tart and a chunk of Wensleydale.

This reminded me of an interview with William Hague some years ago. He said that when he was canvassing before an election he had to telephone a constituent in Hawes. He mis-dialed the number and when the phone was answered he said "is this a Hawes number?" to which the lady replied "You disgusting man - no I am not!".
