National Fish and Chips Day today
in the UK.
Did you know about that, and did you have fish and chips for dinner? We did, with mushy peas and tartare sauce. No photo sorry, it was all scoffed down before I thought about taking a picture.

Yes, I did hear about it Binky, but had forgotten when it was! I only have this occasionally these days and enjoy going to a well-known fish & chip shop in Lytham where the fish is always beautifully fresh.
I'm glad that you enjoyed it!

Re: National Fish and Chips Day today
In Spain, we do have festive days which denote
special regional dishes, however,
unlike North
America, we do not have " a daily food day ".
October 12th, is Hispanic Day, and there are special
dishes in each región based on product availability.
There are thousands of Saint Days, throughout the
Peninsula and each Saint Day in one área is totally
different than another región.
However, Spaniards do have a specific routine:
Breakfast which normally consists of bollos, which
are sweet pastries or churros ( fritters shaped like
an upside down horseshoe ) and / or toast with Evoo
and Tomato Salsa and coffee.
11am - 13.00: Tapas ..
Since our normal lunch hour is from
14.00 - 15.30, we have a tiny meal
to hold us over. A sándwich or tapa,
with a Coffee or Wine or Beer.
Lunch: is our main meal and consists
of 3 courses. Starter, Main and dessert
or fresh fruit .. Served with wine or
a bottle of wáter, still or sparkling
and / or a soft beverage of choice.
La Merienda or Snack: 17.00 - 19.00 ..
This is a tiny meal, a sándwich, or a tapa
and coffee or wine or beer .. Could be
sweet or savoury.
Dinner: Very light .. 21.00 - 22.30 ..
Depending if it is a laboral day or a weekend,
dinner can be fish and a vegetable, or shellfish,
vegetables, eggs or tapas.
As the majority of Spaniards are quite social, this
meal is usually at a bar or outdoor side walk
terrace, and can be a social event ..
If home, dinner is also quite light. And is served
when we get home ..
Do note, we work longer hours than most Europeans,
so we eat quite light at home. A salad or some fish
or something easy on digestive system.
Hope you enjoyed your " fish and chips "
day.

I haven't had fish n chips from a chippy for a couple of decades. Tony cannot stand it, so we don't partake.
Which is a shame, as we have a competition award winning chip shop here - famous throughout the land. Simpsons.
I do however, have fish dishes with fries when at restaurants. Not the same I know!
Some of these Nation Days turn me cold. National Pie Day for example.
Gin - has promise. I tried rhubarb gin at New Year and it was fantastic. Far better than my h/made blackberry gin that was like cough medicine.
I saw a taste test for tonics.
And Fevertree wasn't the best. Waitrose and Sainsbury own brand was preferred.

Re: National Fish and Chips Day today
I made some lovely rhubarb gin from Jassy Davis’ recipe.. The trick was to mix the rhubarb and and sugar and leave it to draw the juices, then add the gin.

We haven't had fish 'n chips from our chippy for years. Will have them at certain local pubs though.
Back in the day I'd cycle to town, fish and chips for all, put in centre of table, fingers mainly plus newsprint. However, our best fish 'n chips is from a Chinese takeaway, but we find by the time we've got them home, the chips and fish are pretty soggy.
One pub also managed to make chips soggy, by plating up with fish covering the chips. Also

Oh dear, missed it!
I did make a pact with myself to eat fish every Friday anyway, but come the following Friday I've always always forgotten
Couldn't be bothered to cook an evening meal, so it was slim pickings last night, I defrosted a naan.

Tut tut Sakkarin, you'll be getting yourself banned from the site.
We're all gourmets here, you know.
A defrosted naan for dinner doesn't cut the mustard. We have our standards to keep up.

Living on my own, I get a bit lazy too, but have defrosted a couple of salmon fillets to use tomorrow for a salad. I bought some Lidl potato salad with crème fraiche which is excellent.
Re: National Fish and Chips Day today
Lidl do some very nice bits for a quick meal.
One of my favourites is a pasta dish (tortellini?) made with spinach and ricotta which you heat in salted water for about 5 mins. A container of their tomato mascarpone sauce warmed up adds to the flavour. We usually grate some parmesan and sprinkle a few basil leaves to make it look authentic.

Thanks for those suggestions Binky. Our Lidl has only been open for a couple of weeks, but it is always very busy and the car park almost full.

I like tortellini and as a quick meal have been serving them dressed with butter and Parmesan alongside asparagus spears dressed the same way. I steamm the asparagus, starting it first, then cook the pasta in the water below

Re: National Fish and Chips Day today
The very best Fish and Chips I´ve ever eaten was in Rye, Sussex, at Marino´s Chip Shop.
https://photos.app.goo.gl/ogXyeenC2KEKWDJ17
We couldn´t believe it. Crispy batter, deliciously cooked cod, and chips that stayed crispy until the very last one.
The owner (or the cook, or both) was Latvian. Or Lithuanian. He double-fried his chips, that was his secret.

Re: National Fish and Chips Day today
When I was young (many moons ago) most "English" chip shops part-fried their chips, then finished them off in very hot fat as and when needed, which only took a couple of minutes. I think the idea was so that they never ran out of chips.
Re: National Fish and Chips Day today
I remember those twice fried chips.
We had fish on Friday, though salmon, OH did with herby couscous wrapped in paper - can't think of the posh word for it.
Waitrose does 20% off fish on a Friday, buy Salmon then because it's so expensive. But two pieces of salmon means a free paper and coffee for £7.34.

Re: National Fish and Chips Day today
If I had been in work on Friday, I would have been able to partake in Fish and Chips Day. However, I was not (still off sick with this abscess malarkey), so we had pork steaks instead. Annoyingly, Good Food website had Tom Kerridge's onion bhaji fish and chips as a highlight recipe on their home page on Friday, and I really want to try it. Unfortunately, Mr Strictly doesn't like curried anything, so it was off limits for the two of us. We have some basa fillets in the freezer, I may have to indulge myself one day this week when he is working. Even If I just have the fish with some salad.
Re: National Fish and Chips Day today
That onion bhaji fish and chips has me interested!
Maybe a way to use up a couple of frozen pollock fillets...
