We are having a cream tea this afternoon at a nearby garden centre! :eating-birthday-cake. We will probably buy a birthday cake for me whilst there, because I don't really feel like baking at the moment. I shall make one when I am feeling better in myself. At this rate it is more likely to be a wedding anniversary cake , as that is coming up in a month's time!

Time to develop a taste for caviar and champagne then. Although a few Brandy Alexanders might be easier on the tummy, but might put you to sleep ;)

Hi jeral and LusciousLush

I have just finished a course of antibiotics as well, so alcohol is off limits at the moment. I've never fancied caviar either

As far as pulses are concerned, I have got some red lentils as a tin of Mexican style beans in the cupboard. As there was a lot of gravy left over from the braised beef we had last night, I will be able to make a bean and veg stew with it. I also now feel a tub of houmous is on the agenda!

We've also got some prawns and seafood mix in the freezer.

Mr Strictly did buy a bottle of Superdrug's version of Centrum's A-Z multivitamin and mineral pills yesterday.

Just a quick update:

Things are going well with the healing process and I am continuing with the 'eating myself better' programme. The bean and veg stew, to which i also added some minced beef, was delicious. We also bought some houmous this week, which I had yesterday, topped with chopped raw tomato, cucumber, some lancashire cheese and a little bit of ham. I made a garlic and herb dip for Mr Strictly, with the same topping plus a couple of sliced green olives. We had bread and cream crackers to spread the dips onto. We both really enjoyed our lunch, the toppings (an American idea) makes it so much more substantial, as well as being attractive to look at.

We've got roast chicken drumsticks tonight, which I will serve with most of the trimmings.

Clare, glad to hear things are going well with the healing :thumbsup
Just a thought - hummus is so easy to make & you'd get better nutrients out of doing your own even using tinned chick peas & especially if you wizzed up your own tahini with the sesame seeds ( zinc, iron etc.) and that takes minutes too - plus you'll have much more than shop bought & to your own taste.

I've just talked myself into making a batch!

Hello all

LL, thanks for the hummus suggestion.

I went to the planned treatment centre at the hospital for an assessment and dressing change today. The nurse did all the basic observations which were all OK apart from I had high blood sugar. I have now got an appointment booked with my GP to see if I have Type 2 diabetes ...... just to add to my woes. I have a horrible feeling that a low carb diet, if needed, is not going to do my gout any good! :x

Blimey, just what you need, something else they've given you to worry about  A bit mean given your good news of good wound-heal progress. My advice would benot to worry or you'll probably get high blood pressure as well! Breathe, and take up yoga instead - or buy some rainbow suncatcher crystals - we're bound to see the sun soon - as they are cheeringly delightful I find.

Am I right in saying that Type 2 diabetes doesn't need a special diet, just a healthy one?

Sorry to hear that strictly, the NHS site, the A - Z part has some good advice on diet for type 2 diabetes and it's not as doom laden as it seems.

Also, a few years back similar thing happened to me, GP was worried about high sugar levels, went for a fasting blood test and all was well.

SiL has managed to reduce her medication simply by cutting down on cakes, biscuits etc.

No diabetes needs a special diet, only a healthy one. Clare - diabetes usually inhibits wound healing so if your wound is healing as expected, then I wouldn't worry too much. And if you are advised to change your diet, whilst you'll need to limit carb. intake, you still need to have some and the amount varies person by person.

Morning all

jeral, Pampy and Petronius - many thanks for all the helpful comments, I feel very comforted by them.

When I went to the GP yesterday, he asked me what the reading was, which was 9. He replied that it is not that high, but has booked me in for a blood test anyway, which I am going to do this afternoon. I will keep you posted! I think it may have been a cortisol spike through stress yesterday. The waiting room of the planned treatment centre is the same one as the endoscopy clinic. As Mr Strictly had a colonoscopy there about 2 and a half years ago, it brought back some difficult memories. He unfortunately fainted when they gave him the sedative, but the whole process was fruitless because the flare up he'd had, had calmed down due to the 5 month waiting time between initial appointment with the GP, the specialist referral and the colonoscopy!

Hi LusciousLush

When i was out yesterday, i bought some dried chickpeas as they are so much cheaper than tinned. As I am not working this week, I realised that I would have time to cook them to freeze in separate portions. I did this earlier this morning and they are currently cooling down! I only cooked about a third of the pack and I will have at least 4 portions to stash in the freezer.

Apparently June 10 to 18 is Diabetes Week. Insert in today's Guardian has an advert from Diabetes UK - "There are 4.7 million people in the UK living with diabetes. And every one is different"

Which follows on from Pampy's post. If it turns out to be diabetes then I'm certain the diet can fit in with your gout.

Before everything changed for OH, GP offered her a place on 'The Healthier You NHA Diabetes Prevention Programme. Might be worth an ask.

Rats and double rats!!!

I have just heard from my GP who has confirmed that I do have diabetes, and my liver is not functioning as well as it should. Plus my sodium levels are also low. I need to have a scan on my liver, and go for another blood test next week (I'll do that on a day when I am having my dressing changed). The practice diabetic nurse will also be getting in touch with me soon to discuss treatment if any.

Nine more rats here to add to the others  (they were in introductions, they don’t normally have such a small cage). Seriously though, sorry to hear the news and hope your next test results have better news.
