What a lovely meal Gill and a gem of a place. You are so lucky to have two fine places close to where you live!

Morning Renee.
We do have others, I guess. Have you got a Thai restaurant near you?

No I haven't Gill. I live in a village in between two towns or three if I count Leyland. There is a very good Japanese restaurant in Leyland, but when I met up there with gym friends, they didn't open at lunchtime unless they had reservations. We still plan to go there at a later date.

Sounds good Gill, though slightly puzzled by the concept of Singapore noodles in a Thai restaurant as I always understood it was a Hong Kong dish

Thinking of getting another Thai cook book, Baan by Kay Plunkett Hogge, I’ve seen a few recipes and they are well explained, she grew up in Thailand but now lives in London so well placed to teach Brits Thai cooking

Unfortunately, the 2 best Thai Restaurants in Spain, are in Madrid, not Barcelona.

We have an excellent Cambodian, however, which I had written about called:

Indo Chine .. Exiample ..

We have a couple of good Japanese, however, the 4 best are not in Barcelona.

Kabuki, Hotel Wellington, The Madrid Capital. ( The best Japanese in Spain )

Kabuki, Tenerife, The Canary Islands ( Japanese )

Soy y Silk, Moraleja, Madrid. ( Thai & Japanese )

Bangkok ( Puerta del Sol, Operá - Centre, Thai )

99 Ponzano, The Madrid Capital ( Nuevos Ministerios, Madrid, Japanese )

Sue, if you get the book, I'd be keen to know if it's any good.

And you've got me thinking about whether the menu says "Singapore Noodles".
It's what I order, as we don't eat rice, but I'm not sure now if that's the menu wording. I shall check next time.
It may say just vegetarian vermicelli?

Renee. When I worked for Swiss Bank, I booked a Japanese restaurant for my boss and 3 colleagues at "his usual table". Twit, he only went once or twice a year.
He was most put out when he got there, and he'd been bumped to a table near the toilets, in favour of 4 Japanese businessmen in town.
He was used to getting his own way, but not on this occasion.

We are shortly heading out for a carvery lunch.
There will be about 20 of us, the venue is in administration and I fear the worst.
However it is a friend's birthday and that's where he wants to go, so I will smile.

Home, service was Fawlty Towers style but the food was good.
Sea bass followed by sticky toffee pudding and a couple of hours of entertainment from a duo the birthday boy had booked.
Some of the guests have headed off to a bar, I am drinking water at home right now.

Born Vicinity ..
Zero Patatero
Pasaje Mercantil 1
93 / 855. 2304 ..

Today we went to a neighboring new venue
to check it out. Ambiance eclectic & the Sardinias Marinadas
(Marinated Sardines) more or less carpaccio of wild & fresh Sardines
were scrumptuous. The culinary philosophy
is the product and bio & ecological.
Owned by the Derby Hotel Corporation.

I’ve been staying in a Best Western Hotel in Meriden, near Coventry. It’s the centre of England, and famous for Triumph motorcycles. It’s a large village, more than a town with an old church surrounded by timber framed houses, probably from the 1500s

Anyhow, the restaurant is a Marco Pierre White Steakhouse. We had a 3 course dinner included
So on Friday I had a starter of “salted beetroot with goat cheese and walnut dressing” it wasn’t specially salty, very sweet thin slices of beetroot processed in some way. Scattered with little cubes of cheese and a lot of candied walnuts, no obvious dressing. It was delist - usually I don’t like candied walnuts because they are too candied, like walnut m&ms but these had the thinnest imaginable glaze, lovely
Then I had individual steak & ale pie with peas. Pie was ok but I would not have used such a wide shallow dish or added so much salt, and I would have put a steam hole in the lid
Pud was “boozy fruit cake” (Christmas cake) with cheddar cheese. Good

Last night the best prawn cocktail I’ve ever had in a restaurant served with brown bread and butter, a nice thick pavé of rump steak with ok frites and a wild mushroom sauce that seemed to be essentially butter infused with the fungi. I wasn’t keen on the sauce with steak (though everyone else liked it) might have been nice poured on mashed potato. Pud was an individual treacle tart with clotted cream

Portions were generous and there were plenty of other choices, different on the two evenings

The thing is, I found it intriguing. I’m not a fan of MPW, but this was Clearly an attempt at something better than the usual chain restaurant, with a nod to fine dining and a definitely British style. I had niggles but if that was the brief, it was a roaring success :clap My mainly male companions liked it too, and most of them have eatenwelk in many places

Nice recommendation Sue.
We been to one in London and enjoyed it, as a solid place to go. Round Chelsea when I had an exhibition there.
Enjoy the rest of your trip.

Wordsworth, well done on your resilience at not going on to the bar afterwards.
I didn't for my sister's 60th, and felt very smug the following morning when others were nursing their heads.

I would have loved those two restaurants Member 461, especially the second one with the beautiful foliage in the garden patio and the exceptional interior design. Sitting in such lovely surroundings makes the meal a wonderful experience.

I'm glad that you enjoyed your meals at the MPW restaurant Sue and it's good to know that they are being quite imaginative with the food.

Renée,

Yes, I agree.

Ambiance is quite a quintessential key
to enjoying a fine dining experience.
I truly enjoy a coastal view, a city view
and / or a garden environment ..
However, I also enjoy histórical architecture
too and fireplaces !! And Manhattan style
loft interiors .. Each with a truly special
quality ..

Have a lovely evening. :wave :wave

Wednesday 11th April - The Madrid Capital ..

This evening in route to our Hotel, located close to
Retiro Park, we decided to have a "tapas crawl"
further downtown (centre).

We headed toward Huertas downtown Madrid, and stopped at:
Vi Cool, which is owned and operated
By: Three Michelin Starred Sergi Arola, who started out in Las
Rosas, close to Cadquès, at the old El Bullí.
Located approx. 75 meters from the Westin Five Star
Palace Hotel on Calle Del Prado.

We had shared a number of " Madrileño" favorites, with dear
Friends who live and work in Madrid for many years.

The stars of the show were:

"Huevos Rotos" (Broken Eggs) prepared with Smoked Salmon ..
Gambas al ajillo ( Dénia red Prawns with garlic served in a cazuela of red clay)
Cazon macerada en Adobe ( Marinated Tope Shark, breaded in chick pea flour and sautéed lightly )
Patatas Bravas with 2 salsas: Smoked Paprika, La Vera & a made on the premises Alioli.
A wonderful Albariño White Wine

So, we walked back to our hotel and here we are, as it is already 23.45.

Good evening.
