made in Brazil

Postby Gillthepainter » Wed Nov 14, 2018 5:05 pm

We have a new deli opened just down from my studio.

I know absolutely nothing about Brazilian food.
Any recommendations of what to try and get my hands on/ look out for when I go in there, please?

My husband and I were in Brazil a couple of years ago ..

1) Acai Berries ( excellent for health )

2) Selvagem Beverages ( soft fruit beverages )

3) Chimarrao - Ervamatte a Soft Beverage

4) Brazilians bake with tapioca flour and / or yuca flour and / or baked goods with these 2 types of flours ..

5) They are grand fans of black beans and have many dishes with them

6) Fei jo a da ( their famous black bean stew )

On a personal note: The Feijoada is quite wonderful and the acai berries .. As they are tart ..

Have a nice day / evening .. :wave

I think you may have to go in and see what samples are offered Gill!

I went to a Brazilian restaurant, and with my mind full of beaches I thought there would be some nice fish dishes

Nope, apparently Brazilians don't really eat fish - meat, meat, meat

This chap is a Brazilian meat eater (Nick Parks Creature Comforts - a recording of a Brazilian not that impressed with the UK)

Gotcha!

Meat, and SPACE.

I suppose I should walk in and have a look around, yes. And let you know.

Thanks Member 461.
I shall see if they have the berries in particular.
Not really sure what to do with the yuca flour if I see it?
(I did get a marvellous flour from Turkey from a local deli, and made a savoury feta and caraway cake with it.)

We've got fantastic diverse delis here.

There is a Brazilian supermarket/deli literally down the road about 10mins walk from where we live, it opened about 2yrs ago. It's mostly a butchers & the guy running it really knows his meat - they have quite a few different cuts to ours - but I try to avoid walking past the place if I can otherwise I'm lured in for their pao de queijo or cheese bread - little round balls of gluten free bread stuffed with cheese......totally irresistible oomph!

Cuzcus is also lovely in the summer - it's not our couscous, but made from cornmeal with lots of spicing veg, egg & sardines & made in a large round mould which you buy slices of.

They do a huge amount of different sausages too, plus oils etc. which I haven't tried yet, I have a good stash of evoo which I need to use first.

Really feel like cheese bread now...……….

Coxhinas are shredded chicken croquettes, Gill.
Sue is spot on : the Brazilians ( like many South American neighbours) are meat eaters. That means breakfast , lunch and dinner. A typical Brazilian restaurant ( Churrasquaria) will serve 15 or more varieties of barbecued meat - often served on an " all-you-can-eat-" basis, with the waiters prowling around the tables with different cuts. Brazil, like Argentina, is Vegetarian Hell   :crying1
Pao de queijo - cheese bread - is worth trying, as it´s made with tapioca flour. Black beans are used in Feijoada, but also is some hefty snacks called Acaraje, which are bean, onion and palm oil patties, deep-fried in palm oil, cut open, stuffed with shrimp, then fried again. A dieter´s paradise!
The best thing about Brazil is Cachaça, a potent alcoholic beverage distilled from sugar cane. Grind some lemons with sugar ( in a mortar), then tip over a glass full of ice and add the cachaça. Bit like a mojito, but better.

Gil,

Yuca ( African Tuber ) brought to Brazil by the Slave Traders, is often called Manioc or Cassava flour ( Gluten Free - Tuber Bread ) :

1) Bread

2) Pao de Quejo Cheese Bread

3) Street Food Pancakes

4) Cheese, Pao de Quejo Balls ( appetisers )

Tapioca Flour ( Gluten Free ) :

Crepes

Karakoolaide is right on .. When we were in Sao Paulo, which is quite close to the sea, the basic stew Fejoada is black beans with a wide variety of meats served with Meats, fried yuca, greens resembling a Swiss Chard and a wide variety of sausages ..

We did have quite an amazing lunch at D.O.M, a three Michelin Star Restaurant owned by Food Designer Alex Atala, who specialises in Michelin regional and Amazonian Brazilian Cuisine .. We had an Amazonian river fish which was sublime ectasy .. We also had Japanese Cuisine as well ..

Both Lisbon and Madrid have a couple of Brazilian Restaurants which are top notch .. During the Winter, we enjoy going for a lunch of Feijoada in the Madrid Capital ..

Gil: Definitely browse about and ask the owner / manager to answer some of your questions ..

Enjoy your adventure !! :wave

Member 461 - no; yuca, cassava or manioc is native to South America. There are two varieties; the white, edible version and something called " Yuca Amarga" ( bitter yuca) which is pinkish and highly poisonous.

That's a coincidence, Lush.
EVOO is definitely on the list tomorrow. I've only got half a bottle left on the kitchen side.
Cheese bread. I'll have to give it a taste. It would be rude not too.

Thanks, Lush. I appreciate it.

Clive
I knew you'd show up with insight.
I do really like the idea of this gluten free bread. I often get asked to make it, and have never thought that Brazil would be the way to approach it.

Right you are.

Karakoolaide,

I had never said, Yuca or Manioc or Cassava was native to Brazil ..

And my 1st sentence is that Yuca is an African Tuber ..

I also stated: The Portuguese Slave Traders brought it to Brazil from Africa ..

Have a nice day ..

That's KK's point .... it was taken from Brazil and introduced into Africa ... it is a native of the Americas ... you got it the wrong way around.

The Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, respected around the globe for plant science, says of Manihot esculenta (cassava/manioc etc) that it is "...widely cultivated for the tuberous roots which form a staple food (Cassava) in many areas in the tropics: native of E. Tropical South America..."

If you click on the link below and scroll down you will see a map of the area of the globe where it is native, and also the areas to which it has been intorduced

I hope no one minds me posting yet another informative link for clarification purposes. ;)

Link away Suffs, I'm amazed how you have the time to do it as well as everything else.

Gill, any new way of baking gluten free bread please post details. Done it a couple of times but tasted more like crumpet than bread.

As for meat eating Brazil, recently someone published a report that we've got to cut down eating meat by 80% to save the environment. Wonder what they will do.

Good link, Suffers.
Of course I used to live in Kew. And know it's world class.

Will do, Dennis.
I'm wandering in tomorrow.

I've eaten at Argentinian restos - my! they like their meat.
But not yet Brazilian. We were talking about having beef for Chrimbo, so this place might be a source of interest forrus too.
