I wonder what their plans are to transform the business.

I don't know cherrytree, but I've just picked up their very excellent hard-backed Christmas book.

I think they've ousted the chief exec. this year and one of the Booth family has taken an executive role. Apparently, he received a letter from a customer commenting on the ridiculousness of some things in the stores - like selling de-icers in summer and half melons for the same price as a whole one. He has taken it all on board and let rip at management for allowing this sort of thing. It sounds like he's taking a far more active role in the business - more here https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/mar ... -shop.html

Thanks very much for the article Pampy, which explains what has been happening within the company. I did think that his sons were involved with the company, but maybe not. I have known Booths all my life with my mum shopping at their much smaller shop at the south end of Blackpool in the 1940s. They have closed some of their smaller branches now. I do hope that they can recover.

Reviving this thread to ask if any of you have taste-tested wine and other vinegars like cider vinegar?

I’m not a huge vinegar fan but my everyday vinegar is Aspall’s Organic Cyder Vinegar, I also like their red and white wine vinegars, and the Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc varietals are I think even nicer. I don’t usually bother to have both white wine & cyder versions

I bought Morrison’s own brand red wine vinegar this time, and I don’t think it’s as nice

Not keen on Aspall’s Balsamic
This is the current line up, the one on the left is white balsamic condiment of Modena from TK Maxx, lovely on tomatoes

I loathe vinegar. Distilled white handy for cleaning plus a delish rhubarb salad dressing recipe. Sainsbug Balsamic is OK. I had a big clear-out and they were tipped into the 'Cleaning Vinegar, do not eat' bottle. Saba is nice.

I haven't done a comparison taste test but agree with Sue that Aspall's cyder and red wine vinegars seem very acceptable. I use the cyder where one might often use malt vinegar (because both last me ages and it saves having two bottles).

I find Sainsburys decent balsamic is fine for cooking but obviously not comparable with the wonderful fruity expensive ones for dipping. Also in my cupboard is some ancient Chinese rice wine vinegar and some treasured walnut vinegar from France which I love mixed with walnut oil as a dressing.

Does anyone else remember the tagline "After Father with the Sarson's" - I can even hear the jingle.

I had one Christmas when half my friends gave me fruit vinegars

Turned out neither OH nor I liked them in anything we could think of

I ended up making a batch of onion chutney to us it up - had a wonderful colour and I think it did add to the depth of flavour

I like the Odysea balsamic vinegar from Sainsburys. And their pomegranate molasses too, except, even though I’m on my my second or third bottle, I can’t remember which recipe I bought it for in the first place. Lovely on salads though.

i make my own red and white wine vinegars, buy balsamic vinegar or 'condiment' and buy cheap, white distilled for cleaning and some pickles.
i think there's a bottle of malt vinegar in the cupboard.
i'm not sure that any other vinegars (infused ones) would get used before they lost their aroma
i haven't bought cider vinegar but have bought some cider that quickly turned to vinegar!

I buy raw unfiltered organic cider vinegar from Lidl. I also like Sainsbury's white balsamic vinegar.

Some time ago I discovered wonderful fruit white balsamic vinegars, made in California in TKMaxx/Home Sense, but they haven't had them in since. I have recently discovered this company which has good products including the fruit white balsamic vinegars which I love to use for salads.
