water in general, and water filters

Postby Gillthepainter » Thu Oct 11, 2018 9:40 am

I bought a Brita jug for the studio. I drink 2 or more litres of water a day. Tap water.
But I saw the water I'd left in there over the weekend, and it had turned electric green.

what's THAT!?

So I've decided not to use the filter any more.

It’s just algae ... you’d removed the stuff in the water that stops the algae growing so when you leave it in a warm and light place it grows and photosynthesises and produces chlorophyll. Keep filtered water in the fridge!!!!

thanks Suffness.
Do you know why Brita filter water has the algae.
But ordinary tap water doesn't?

Gill, there is a reply here from Brita to someone who had the same problem:

Tap water contains chlorine
This kills off unicellular organisms like bacteria and algae (which is why it’s there)
Brita strips out chlorine so the water doesn’t take like swimming pool

I use a Pozzani filter - similar, but inline to a little tap
Makes much nicer tea and coffee and I keep a bottle in the fridge

I have a Pozzani filter and tap system too. I find it much handier than a jug filter and the filter only needs replacing every 6 months.

Ah thank you, and thanks for the conversation link, Renee.

I mistakenly was concerned that the algae glow was coming out of the filter pod.
And thought about abandoning the water jug because of it.

I shall get a new filter on my way past Wilko, and start again.

The pozzani jug is cheaper tho.
I wish I'd seen that in the summer, I would have bought one.

We have had a water filter for years, ever since we abandoned bottled water all together. We also have a water softner so only one tap provides drinking water. It is hard but usually tastes fine.

It didn't take us long to work out that the jug needed to be kept in the fridge, topped up frequently and washed out with hot water and washing-up liquid at legallons in the heat in the summer when we have guests and drink ast once a week. Our jug has an indicator to tell us when to change the filter - which is about every 3 weeks when the weather is hot or we have guests.

My Pozzani system is plumbed in with a small tap at the side of the sink, not a jug.

I saw that, Pampy.
My jug is in the studio, not home.

Hi Joan.
I remember the days when I was abroad in the 80s. The water was terrible.
