Sushi making kit?
My OH is getting more and more keen on cooking and it appears that he particularly likes the 'prep' ... everything chopped into dishes and lined up etc
We both love 'sushi' ........... I'm thinking of a Sushi making kit as part of his Christmas pressie .... does anyone have any suggestions or, even better, a recommendation?
I was thinking up to £30 ish.
Shhhhhhhhhh! Whispers please .... he's at home today

Ooo that's a great idea.
I have no suggestions. Other than perhaps a sushi making course? Does you Waitrose do courses near you?
I know ours has demos, and did a Sushi one.
Also, source a sushi ingredient shop near you.
We have several, but are so lucky to have a Natural Grocery Store, that sources impeccable ingredients - mostly Middle and Far Eastern and vegetarian.

Re: Sushi making kit?
You don't really need a kit Suffs. My cousin Mike's wife is Japanese and we all enjoyed a sushi-making evening which was very much hands on.
You will need to get a pack of nori, the flat very thin sheets of dried seaweed. Sushi rice should be easily obtainable; a small bottle of sushi vinegar, which is slightly sweet, or you could make up your own; wasabi paste, which is in a tube, or you could make your own from the wasabi powder. The tube would be easier. You don't really need a mat. A piece of cling film will do.
I used to use raw salmon, but freeze it first, matchsticks of cucumber, but the choice is yours!
You will need a dip too. I used to make this from Japanese soy sauce (I used Kikkoman after tasting them all!), sesame oil and a bit of chopped chilli.
This is all from memory, but hope that it helps!
Ooops, a bit of sugar in the dip.

He does like instructions ... and we don't have a Japanese family member to hand ... but maybe there's a good book around ....?
Re: Sushi making kit?
Why didn't I think of that? I could put a kit together from mailorder, put his laptop in the kitchen and shut him in there ...
Re: Sushi making kit?
Sorry Suffs, just back from hols and brain not working yet. I remembered that it was to be a birthday present, so your idea is a good one with the kit and a simple to follow book! Have a look on Amazon for the book, because there are plenty of reviews and you can usually "Look inside" a book.
We crossed!

Welcome back.
(By the way, I've made a painting brush holder from a sushi mat. With thick elastic threaded through. It keeps the brushes protected and firm).

Re: Sushi making kit?
It might be nice to get a kit as a present though
If I were looking for such a thing I’d head for Japan Centre, also available on line the kit looks good and has ingredients as well as hardware

And how about some nice dishes for the sauces/dips/finished rolls, complete with pretty chopsticks/"benches" for them and so on ...

Thanks Gill

Re: Sushi making kit?
I found these fabric-lined bamboo boxes at Woolworth's. They'd be great as a gift box.
I realise you don't have Woolworth's anymore (I am not sure our Woolies are the originals ... probably something new), but I have seen these boxes in several places, so I guess they may be available in Britain, too.
I've given mine a clear varnish and they are really nice. They are 12 inches x 7 inches x7 inches
but I've seen several different sizes.

That box looks lovely Uschi - it would make it all look "the biz" (proper)
As it's only October and the urge is upon Mr Suffs now, I'm wondering if he might have already collected the bits and bobs necessary before Christmas (including what you already have) so perhaps consider an early Xmas pressy or an un-birthday treat of a book and some ingredients?
You might also be able to find or make a chef's suchi-imprinted pinafore. Marco whatsisname's crossed knives spring to mind, or could buy Mr Suffs a Japanese cleaver knife - that would take up most of your budget though.
Incidentally, some Youtubes suggest wrapping the rolling mat in clingfilm so the sticky rice doesn't gunk it up, thus avoiding wrecking it by washing.

Re: Sushi making kit?
Mr Suffs now works for ProCook ... he even demonstrates knives ... he has access to some very wonderful Japanese knives at a very attractive discount ... the one thing I will not be buying him is a knife
Re: Sushi making kit?
Jeral, that box is also fairly good value for money at 5.99 Euro. Less than a Quarterpounder meal.
I keep my bathroom things in one like it at Axel's, that way things look tidy once I drop the lid.
