a book recommendation please
for my list for Christmas.
Just one.
I'll pass them over to Tony to choose for me.
No puddings, and not a running narrative one please - I'd rather have a recipe book, than a thumping good read.
If anyone is looking for a recommendation from me, I'd say Bill Granger's Everyday Asian recipes. I've made a number of dishes from it.

Re: a book recommendation please
As I am slightly obsessed with Middle Eastern food, and with Syria I got the Cook for Syria book. It’s recipes contributed by different cooks, and most are good. I have Jack Munro’s version of za’atar in the fridge it’s good though I might use a tad less cumin next time, I ground it fresh and it came out pretty strong.
I might get Bake for Syria too

Lovely suggestions, thank you.
Syrian is particularly unusual. Sounds great.
And I haven't got anything Syrian in my bookshelves.

It has to be admitted that some of the recipes are more “inspired by” than actual Syrian recipes but they are good cooks and as I’ve met a couple I’m fairly reassured that the profits are going in the right direction.

Onto the growing list.

The Three Sisters Indian Cookbook is extremely colourful and a pleasure to use. My husband is the curry cook in our house and he always gets good results.

Re: a book recommendation please
Hi there, Binky.
And thank you for the recommendation. I actually don't have so much in the way of Indian books.
But we both love the cuisine. In fact, it's our go to restaurant if we want a meal out too.
On the IOW at the weekend, the hotel offered us a 4 course meal for £15 each. You know the type, eaten between 5pm and 6:30.
But we went to an excellent Indian place.

As far as I know all the English language Culinaria are out of print
Mine was bought I think Christmas 2005, and as I said, already out of print then
Good copies sell for £30 - 80 to collectors

Ah.
Thanks Sue. I really just need a list of accessible decent cookery books.
We used to have a cookery book shop here, where unusual requests would have been found easily. But it closed some years ago.

Sue,
I am sure there are some copies in English in the 2nd hand book shops and flea markets in The U.K.
I bought mine in F.N.A.C. in Spanish several years ago ..
Perhaps, writing the Publisher might prove fruitful at least for a couple of the editions ..

Gill, have you got anything by Tessa Kiros? I particularly like Falling Cloudberries, but Mrs B can't get on with it as it is divided geographically, so (for example) the puds are at the end of each chapter and the index is idiosyncratic.
Lots of people on the forums like Every Grain of Rice by Fuchsia Dunlop, but I've only got her Sichuan book. That's pretty good though.

Falling Cloudberries.
Lovely. Onto the list. I remember looking at it before when you mentioned it. But I didn't buy it for some reason.
Maybe I had kindle version on my mind.
This time, I'm looking for a book.
I do have Every Grain of Rice, and love it.
Sue you recommended it I believe when I was looking for something completely different.

Re: a book recommendation please
Quite a few of the Tessa Kiros books seem to be out of print. I've been hunting for Piri Piri Starfish for a while, loth to buy a second hand one online and unseen.
I have noticed that her Recipe Collection is arranged more conventionally than the other books. I haven't bought that, as it's a 'Best Of' and contains recipes I've already got. To be fair, a lot of her recipes are versions of classics that can be found elsewhere. For example, Provence to Pondicherry, is a book of recipes from across the Francophone world. There are two chapters of recipes from France itself, one on Normandy and one Provence (funnily enough). All those recipes might be found elsewhere, including Elizabeth David's books on French cuisine. However, I'm less familiar with the sections from Réunion, Vietnam and Guadeloupe.
The joy of Falling Cloudberries is its variety - recipes from Finland, Cyprus, Greece, Italy and South Africa amongst others, some classics, some new to me, and the obvious love and humanity in the writing. As I said, it winds up Mrs B no end...
