New Addition to North London's "Oriental Triangle"

For local Oriental food lovers, I happened to be driving past the new Yeohan Plaza/Oriental City food hall, "Bang Bang Oriental" in Colindale the other day (first time since it opened), and I see that a huge Loon Fung has opened next door - an extra reason to give it a visit if you were dithering.

I coincidentally had to pick something up in Ealing yesterday, and the trip takes me past the existing Alperton Loon Fung, so I popped in for an impromptu visit. I had to keep a firm check on myself, as it is such a treasure trove of delights I could spend fortunes.

It seems a lot cleaner and brighter than I remember, and the fresh produce in particular is now second to none, and they have good stocks of many hard to find items like green peppercorns, sator beans, sawtooth herb, durian, abalone, the works, I should have taken a pen and paper, there's too much to mention.

Their pork belly is unbelievably cheap, can't remember exactly how much, but I think it was £3.49 a kilo. At the other extreme however their preserved pork belly (Chinese bacon) is around £12.50 a pack. Remember my Chinese bacon thread? About £1.50's worth of pork belly is all it takes to DIY.

I mentioned recently that Sainsburys have started selling lime leaves at a disgraceful £1.20 for four pairs. Loon Fung's frozen lime leaves: 100g for £1.05, that's dozens of pairs. Oh for the good old days when you could buy fresh ones by the armful.

Sakkarin, yes very lucky indeed. There's no Chinese presence here so a local train journey required. In the nearest one, which is very good, the labels are all in Chinese so when I go it's more a visit to gaze in wonderment. How do you cope with translating if you've no idea what something is nor what to do with it? Handy tips? Ta.

I love Chinese supermarkets . Asian cooking isn’t an area I’m particularly skilled in , but even stocking up on basics such as spices and soy sauce is well worth it . The fruit and veg tend to be very good too.

We've been visiting Bang Bang Oriental between 1 and 4 times a week since it opened, at least once a week in the last few months since I've not been working. LOVE IT! I'm going to do an updated blog post soon with our favourites, as the last post I did about it was shortly after it opened.

I've also had some great dim sum in the Golden Dragon restaurant below, and want to go back for their steamboat / hotpot and regular menu.

I buy pastries at the bakery just opposite the foodcourt, bought black sesame and egg yolk mooncake last visit.

The Loon Fung supermarket is not huge but actually has a great selection, so we often pop in. Plus there's a Morrison's upstairs and I am a fan of their meat selections and other items.

Does anywhere there do Roti Canai (the whole thing with the curries and bits and bobs)? That's one I hanker after from the old Yeohin Plaza. And a decent Laksa.

I only spotted the Loon Fung whilst driving past, and the frontage looked quite substantial, it looked as if it was only just being completed.

Oh and the Loon Fung has looked like that for months but I think it's because they MIGHT build another storey on top and so they left all the scaffolding but the shop has been open / finished for months.
