Yes, I can well believe that Mark. Mary is very kind and wouldn't want to upset anyone. However, I also think that anyone entering the Bake-Off must be prepared for the truth from Paul.

Well! There´s a revelation!
Still, if we´re talking " Reality TV", then the reality must be uncovered. I´m very much in the Gordon Ramsay/ Simon Cowell corner. If it´s rubbish, then it´s rubbish

If the contestants enter to learn from the expert judges, then arguably they'll be glad to hear the truth won't they so as to improve? In fairness, Paul does offer snippets of advice on how to remedy obvious faults.
There are chefs/cooks who themselves serve things saying "Mmm, don't you love it? "Isn't that something you'll make every day now?" thus inviting "Ooh yes, you are good". Those who employ that "Great aren't I?" sales pitch should get over themselves IMO.
The worst thing in cooking competitions for contestants must be having to use an unfamiliar oven. There was a brilliant moment on the Ch.4 version when one of the slide-under oven doors fell off completely
