Aeropress!
I have recently been away for a couple of weeks and whilst in a Whittard's store in the new Bracknell shopping centre, I found myself staring at an Aeropress, so just had to buy it. I couldn't find the thread for it, where Sakkarin highly recommended it, so have started a new one. I haven't used it yet. I also bought some chocolate covered coffee beans which were so delicious.
Re: Aeropress!
Ha! Welcome to the club!! Hope you enjoy it.
Here's the thread on the old site, too late to transfer it now
http://carta.co.uk/foodforum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=2917
The main thing is to leave the kettle for a minute to let it cool down slightly, don't use boiling water. I use the "upside down" method.
I didn't realise Whittards were still around, they disappeared from Watford many years ago.

Re: Aeropress!
Thanks so much for the thread, Sakkarin! The Whittards store on Deansgate in Manchester also closed down, although I rarely go into Manchester these days.
Re: Aeropress!
There is still a branch of Whittards in Manchester, it is under the Royal Exchange, the Market Street side.

Re: Aeropress!
We've still got our Whittards too.
Renee, I super enjoyed trying out different coffees. I've come down to LaVazza Rossa coffee.
I make up pods in the morning for Tony & the espresso machine,
& make aeropress coffees for moi. I'm currently on my 4th ...............
Foodie recommended Ethiopian coffee, which I get when I see it too.
I like it middle-mellow and blond.
I wash mine in soapy water periodically, but otherwise just rinse, and drain. Mine still plunges with as much resistance as the day I bought it.
Going nice and strong.

Thanks for the coffee recommendation Gill. I still haven't used it yet … things seem to keep happening and the very hot weather doesn't help. I'm going to re-read the old thread today and will try it out.

Re: Aeropress!
How are you getting on with the aeropress, Renee.
Whilst in the medieval town of Sarlat in France, I bought some roasted on the premises coffee, ethiopean, and a blend of moka.
I'm so sad to see them finished, I've just had my last aeropress cup. Sniff.
Question?
Is is easy to roast coffee beans at home?

Re: Aeropress!
I have to confess Gill, that I have only used it once, but will remedy that right away and will grind up some more beans today.
I knew someone called Ken online who did buy green beans from Amsterdam and roasted his own, but I don't know how they would compare to the coffee beans that we buy. I would think it's a bit hit and miss. I can buy recently roasted beans from Booths, who have their own coffee roaster, but went off their Monsoon Malabar for a while, because it changed, but now it's back to the way that it used to be.

Re: Aeropress!
There's a place in Blackburn (Exchange Coffee Co) which roasts it's own beans - the smell when going past is heavenly!
Apparently, the strength of coffee is mainly determined by how long it's roasted for - the more roasting, the stronger and more bitter the coffee.

Re: Aeropress!
I went to the one in Clitheroe a few years ago. I will order the Columbia Full Roast online.

Re: Aeropress!
I'll leave it to the experts to roast then.
We have got a deli chap near the station who has his own blend, which is excellent. He sells bags by the kilo.

Re: Aeropress!
I'm wondering if the coffee place in Sarlat would post some to you? The phone number is here. Several people online are talking about the place.

Re: Aeropress!
Nice idea Renee.
But it's a wee bit too far to get my coffee, practically speaking.
Bristol is probably easier.
It has a coffee bean that I really like, if I can remember what it is. Flint? Something like that.

There's a coffee roaster / blender near here (Broadway Market) I keep meaning to get to and try. I might make it soon!

Re: Aeropress!
OOOo, you are lucky.
Here in the Cotswolds we are blessed with tea and coffee shops, so I can't complain.
There's probably a roasting shop I don't know about.

Here you go Gill!
I thought about you when I came across this picture! It is in Columbia and someone is roasting coffee beans at home. If it's good enough for them, surely it's good enough for us. It produces the freshest taste ever.

Re: Aeropress!
I did wonder if it was as easy as heating up a pan till smoking hot ........ and it looks as though it is.
Thanks for the photo, Renee.
I've just found this coffee roaster map of the UK.

Re: Aeropress!
I’ve seen small roasting set ups and most seem to involve a drum that mixes the beans to ensure even roasting. I suspect mixing is important and the wok shaped pan would make it easy
