Re: BARGAIN BASEMENT

Postby Sakkarin » Thu May 21, 2020 1:03 pm

I didn't have my phone with me, or I'd have posted a pic.

I didn't buy a cucumber in Lidl yesterday as I only wanted half of one, which I was going to get from Tesco. Both cheaper and less wasteful.

In the event, I'd done an early shop at 8.30, passing a queueless Tesco to get to Lidl, but hadn't realised that all the oldies turn up for their special entrance at 9.00, so when I went back past Tesco there was a huge queue, so I went home without cucumber.

I went back later, when there was no queue, and here's my point. Whole cucumbers were on special offer at 39p, half ones 40p. Literally alongside each other. I am ashamed to say that I went for the whole cucumber even though half of it will probably go to waste, I could not bring myself to pay MORE for a half one.

Have you got a friend or neighbour who would relieve you if the other half?

I’m afraid I often buy multi buy when I know I won’t use it all, I just give the other portion to my sister.

There is a distinct lack of multi buy offers around at the moment.

People who come here from other countries are bemused by the British half cucumber - they see no more need for it than the half onion or half tomato
Dates back to when hothouse cucumbers were expensive I think

I slice some cucumber into a jug of water. It adds some flavour to a glass of water.

Great, with the other half of the cucumber, I'll make myself 25 cups of cucumber water!

I have done the same for my first ever online shop, having now been put on the priority list ...

Apart from salads and sandwiches cucumber is pretty good in stir fries, my long-ago Chinese flat-mate used to cook it all the time

I use cucumber in stir frys - remove the seeds and cut into batons. I use radishes too, including the leaves.

Interesting thought, I will give it a try. I guess it would be slightly reminiscent of bean sprouts, which I also usually end up throwing half away too.

I'm pretty sure that several millenia ago I grated cucumber into bechamel and served it with poached ( or maybe baked) white fish.

I think I enjoyed it because I definitely did it more than once.

My cheating posh sauce for salmon or trout - hollandaise from a jar + grated cucumber and/or chopped fresh dill gently heated :)

For as long as I can remember, I have been buying either Sensodyne toothpaste or Colgate toothpaste for sensitive teeth. I do have a problem with worn away enamel on one tooth, which can be painful. I have noticed over the years that the tubes have reduced in size such a lot.

Colgate Sensitive Toothpaste is £3.80 for 75ml.

Dentalux Sensitive Toothpaste in Lidl is 69p for 150ml.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that the cheap Lidl toothpaste actually works well and tastes nice too. It also has all the benefits that other toothpastes have. I just wish that I'd discovered it sooner.

That's a good one Renee. I love their Cien moisturising body cream, the best I have found for dry skin, Goodness knows what the ingredients are but they're as unintelligible on expensive creams to me!

That is a find Renée - I use Sensodyne because it is SLS free but I checked yesterday and the Dentalux is too, the Colgate sensitive isn’t.

I used to use the Lidl Cien roll on deodorant but stopped when they changed the range of scents and I didn’t like them. Should have another sniff, that was a long time ago.

I hate scented deodorant. The cream hasn't really got a scent.

The silver top Cien deodorant was unscented originally

Thank you for the recommendation Earthmaiden. My favourite product from Lidl is the Cien Q10 Intensive Serum.

I am lucky to have a new Lidl just down on the main road which is quite spacious and well planned inside.

"Craisins" dried cranberries half price in Tesco: £1 for 150g. Perfect, as I needed some for my naughty muesli bars.
