Should've crossed the other fingers! Bought Lasagne from Waitrose, Charlie Bingham plus free coffee. :thumbsup

OH was so looking forward to it, something different and all I had to do was put it in the oven. She was described a powerful antibiotic on Tuesday with strictly no alcohol and dire warnings from everyone to check food etc. Lasagne had red wine, so it's now in the freezer and we had jacket with tuna mayo. At least we could smile about it. :D

J goes for a pint with a couple of other grumpy old men on a Tuesday evening.
I was prescribed antibiotics a few months ago and he mentioned it to one of the group, a retired dentist.
He chuckled and said I was to make sure I obeyed the no alcohol warning as it contained the same active ingredient as the stuff alcoholics are given. Apparently it would make me v ill.
I obeyed, probably for the only time in my life.

Metronidazole (Flagyl) is a variant on the Antabuse molecule used to help people stay sober Usually little five sided tablets, but can be round

Often given for dental problems, waterworks or some forms of dysentery

Alcohol with it can make you very nauseous

sorry to hear that, Dennis.

Lucky your OH was there to put you right, Wordsworth.
You might not have known what was up, if you'd been drinking too with the pills.

I was given this a few months ago and had an extreme reaction to it - I was covered in large weals and nearly scratched myself to death! It did the job though.

I've had that antibiotic too, I was given it as a 'precaution' by an awful consultant following an emergency admission to hospital. It made me feel so unwell, bad digestive symptoms and horrible itching. Was such a relief to finish the course. Turned out I didn't need it anyway but he'd dismissed the opinion of the junior/less senior doctors on his team

I have taken metronidazole a few times. In every case no obvious reaction to the drug. I felt lousy but you would expect that with a case of intestinal giardia caught as food poisoning in Istanbul

The thing is there aren’t many drugs that defeat Protozoa like giardia and amoeba but metronidazole is pretty effective

I didn't even have an infection though, my pain was caused by a large ovarian cyst that was only just under the threshold for surgery. The doctor was adamant it wouldn't cause me pain (!) so put me on two strong antibiotics instead

Giardia - nasty!! A friend caught that in the Gambia - it took months to clear, she had a torrid time of it as it wasn't picked up straight away by her GP despite samples going off to the tropical medicine place in L'don.

She still has a holiday home in the Gambia.....it would put me off.

Snitch - yes that does seem an example of rampant over prescribing

I have tooth ache! Dentist prescribed Metronidazole, for five days, seeing her next Wednesday to see if they've stopped the infection, if not it'll be taken out. Should've thought faster, take it out now! Paracetamol does its job for about four hours. :thumbsdown

It was prescribed for me for a mouth infection too. I took the strong version of Nurofen (Nurofen Plus?) along with paracetamol and it was quite good at keeping the pain at bay.

Thanks Pampy, so Metronidazole, paracetamol and Nurofen Plus worked for you? Let's hope it works for me.

Pampy, it seems that you continued taking the drug although you had a bad reaction. Is it alright to do that? I usually contact a doctor if I'm having a bad reaction to anything, but maybe I should continue taking a drug.
