Re: Beverages
I wouldn’t say it’s much like Chablis though I’d pair it with much the same foods, to me less mineral and the citrus note is subtle, a hint of grapefruit (assuming my nose is now reasonably accurate)
My go to house wine is Sauvignon Blanc and this is different enough to make a really nice change.
Went to the winery in Santorini for a tasting, their version is delicious
Edit: it’s quite a lot like a good Albariño perhaps

halfateabag wrote:Renee, found Fever Tree ginger ale yesterday in Morrisons but no ginger beer, is that the one you meant ??? It was OK but nothing very special. The Old Jamacia GB is very fiery. Good with a squirt of lime juice in it.
I had a tin of low calorie Ice Cream Soda with supper today, a bit sweet for me.
So very sorry, halfateabag, I've been a bit lax recently, due to going away a couple of times. The ginger ale isn't the one. I've never liked ginger ale.
This is the one:

Re: Beverages
Aldi didn't have tonic until recently, despite selling excellent own brand gin!
But it seems that Schweppes still make it and Sainsburys and Morrison's sell it

I mostly shop at Asda, occasionally Sainsbury and both these supermarkets have Bitter Lemon. Waitrose also has it.

i'm confused that you say aldi only recently had tonic - i have bought it in the distant past from there.
don't all supermarkets sell it?

Re: Beverages
I am notoriously unreliable on chronology - by recently I probably meant “relatively recently”
But the first few bottles of gin I bought from Aldi I definitely had to get the tonic elsewhere as they didn’t sell it, and I remember other people commenting on it too
But actually that must have been a while back, as I used to drive to Aldi then. I didn’t go much for a while and by the the time I started going again I think they had it, but it was less of a concern as they had changed the gin

Re: Beverages
Thank you for that clarification. I can't get to Sains, asda or Morrisons!
Aldi are selling Fever tree tonics this year

We have just received our package from Mother Root https://www.motherroot.london/
We originally ordered it for Christmas but covid struck down their delivery service so they offered us a refund or later delivery.
This was what we ordered: https://www.motherroot.london/products/ ... oda-bundle
It looks like an interesting - if ubertrendy - concept
Will report back ... and interested to hear if anyone else has tried them?

Re: Beverages
Well, we just tried it.
Very gingery, I enjoyed the nice salty aftertaste, but OH said he found it a bit acidic and DS1 said it had made his tummy go funny.
We mixed it in the proportions they recommend, 25ml to 100ml soda water
Different - at least we'd never had anything like it but then we're really not very well versed in cocktaily/aperitify sorts of drinks
ZC, I don't know what shrub is

Similar sort of thing I think

American variations on cordial?
The vinegar ginger one seems to be a thing. Possibly an acquired taste
This one for blackberries, looks really interesting- it's left for 3 weeks until slightly fizzy - almost kombucha-like but a cordial

Re: Beverages
I have discovered an alcohol-free gin which I really like. Sipsmith's Free Glider.
https://www.ginandtonicly.com/reviews/s ... ee-spirit/
It's very light on the botanicals, unlike its rivals, and is lovely with Fevertree. Expensive though, as they all are.

Isn't alcohol-free spirit an oxymoron?
And why so pricey??? (couldn't find an ingredients list)

Re: Beverages
I don't think they should call it spirit really, as to me that implies there's more than water in the liquid
But they are actually distilled, and apparently it's more difficult to get a well-developed, consistent, flavour without alcohol than with it, which makes sense to me having done a fair bit of distillation in labs, it's the alcohol that carries the flavour
So that makes it not cheap, as made in small batches by a difficult process, but given there is no excise duty I think they are definitely seriously overpriced
As a non-alcoholic drink I like the Fevertree Aromatic tonic, which isn't actually improved in my view by adding gin or vodka, - worth a try, but some won't like it as it is very bitter and not at all sweet, which suits me,

You also have to be over 18 to purchase it.

Odd
I checked, the duty on spirits in the U.K. is ~£11.50 per litre or ~£8 per standard bottle
And on Amazon standard Tanqueray gin is £20 /litre (£22 - £26 in most shops) but alcohol free is £16 /bottle - which is £22 per litre

Re: Beverages
I bought some 0.5% Ghost Ship from a supermarket once. The self-service till wouldn’t let me have it without independent confirmation that I was over 18. The lad who provided it looked to be all of 12, of course.
